In 2018, the National Academies challenged the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to lead the development of an In-Time Aviation Safety Management System (IASMS). This IASMS would enable increasingly autonomous aviation operations by automating the safety monitoring, assessment, and mitigation functions currently performed manually as part of the Safety Management System (SMS) process.
