Because of the urgent schedule imposed on environmental issues, the Pond Waste Management Project (PWMP) implemented a tailored systems engineering (SE) approach for managing, integrating, and documenting its activities and for ensuring that both state and federal requirements for treating and storing low-level radioactive mixed-waste sludge would be met. This tailored approach focused on seven essential activities: system requirements, project plan, SE plan, configuration management plan, risk assessment, best management practices plan, and operational readiness review.
