Abstract
In this presentation, Bill Baue explores how sustainability standards have, over the past two decades, often undermined authentic sustainability. Drawing on his forthcoming peer-reviewed study, he examines the limitations of current standards and outlines practical ways to work within them while pursuing more meaningful outcomes.
The session introduces concepts and tools such as Triple Materiality, Context-Based Sustainability, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Performance Indicators. Together, these approaches help organizations move toward authentic sustainability while still maintaining compliance with existing standards and addressing the broader existential risks of systemic unsustainability.
