INCOSE is evolving its publications portfolio to provide clearer, more focused content for the diverse audiences within the systems engineering community.
“In shaping INCOSE’s future, we are evolving our publications portfolio to better meet our members’ needs, supporting the broader systems community, and ultimately societies,” said Bill Miller, Editor-in-Chief of INSIGHT magazine.
Throughout the remainder of 2026, the current INSIGHT will continue to be published in its current magazine format, giving readers the opportunity to enjoy its final traditional issues. INSIGHT is currently INCOSE’s practitioner-focused magazine, featuring accessible articles, interviews, case studies, and lessons from real-world systems engineering practice.
Beginning in January 2027, INSIGHT will transition from a traditional magazine into a year-round online publication featuring interviews and conversations with authors, editors, practitioners, and experts from across the systems engineering field. The new format will allow INCOSE to share timely, accessible content throughout the year while highlighting the people, ideas, and experiences shaping the profession.
Twice each year, INCOSE will also publish a downloadable PDF edition containing a curated collection of featured INSIGHT interviews and articles. These editions will preserve the magazine-style reading experience while allowing individual pieces to be released throughout the year.
Alongside the evolution of INSIGHT, INCOSE is also launching INCOSE Applications & Case Studies (IASC), a new open-access practitioner journal dedicated to field research, real-world applications, and lessons from systems engineering practice. The journal will provide a focused venue for advanced practices, applied methods, and practical knowledge that systems engineering professionals can apply within their own projects and organizations.
“The IACS‘ focus is to communicate practicable outcomes, thereby demonstrating the value of systems engineering to our members as well as the broader systems community and the even broader socio-technical communities and enterprises,” added Bill Miller.
The launch of a publication dedicated specifically to practitioner research will also help define the role and audience of each publication more clearly. Although INSIGHT has historically served practitioners, its content has included a broad mix of technical articles, interviews, commentary, and professional perspectives. Under the new model, applied research and documented experience from the field will have a dedicated home in INCOSE Applications & Case Studies, while INSIGHT will focus on the people, ideas, and conversations shaping the profession.
“A danger of separate journals is that academics stay in the SEJ “bubble”, practitioners stay in the IACS “bubble”, and government domains stay in their “bubbles.”” Bill continued by saying, “the intent of INSIGHT becomes the breaking down of our silos to nurture a highly collaborative ecosystem that is fit for purpose to address our 21st Century challenges as stated in the Systems Engineering Vision 2035: Engineering Solutions for a Better World (INCOSE 2021).”
Together, these changes will establish more distinct publication pathways within the INCOSE portfolio:
- INSIGHT will focus on interviews, professional perspectives, and accessible conversations with people working throughout the systems engineering community.
- INCOSE Applications & Case Studies will focus on practitioner research, applied methods, case studies, and documented experience from the field.
- Systems Engineering will maintain a more defined focus on scholarly research that advances the systems engineering discipline.
