Great Plains Chapter

Welcome to the Great Plains Chapter

The Great Plains Chapter of INCOSE draws membership from the state of Kansas and the Oklahoma City area.  The Great Plains leadership team is in both Wichita, Kansas, and Oklahoma City.  Events take place virtually to make it possible for all members of the chapter and interested guests to participate from one of the central locations in Wichita and Oklahoma City or from anywhere.

The INCOSE Great Plains Chapter was established in 2011 in Wichita, Kansas by a group of people primarily from Boeing and Textron Aviation.  In the 2015 time frame, Boeing closed operations in Wichita, and several members transferred to Oklahoma City.  Since that time, the Great Plains Chapter has hosted almost all meetings (tours being an exception) on line so that everyone can participate.

We normally meet in Wichita at the National Center for Aviation Training which is now part of Wichita State University.  The Oklahoma City branch of our chapter has found a home at the Engineering and Design Professional Center.  With a virtual component to our meeting every time, we have been perfectly positioned to hold virtual meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Join the Atlanta Chapter on December 3, 2020 for our final meeting of 2020! We'll have some updates by chapter President Dave Takacs followed by an exciting talk by INCOSE Fellow Rick Steiner.

Atlanta December 2020 Meeting Information

Abstract

Rick will walk us through a simple educational model built in OpenMBEE, from which he generated a system description document (in VE and also pdf).  This model tells the story of the development and refinement of the main battle rifle used by the US Army in WWI and subsequently in WWII, a simple system but with significant repercussions and refinement.  It can also lead to a deeper understanding of system boundaries, interfaces, and requirements.

Speaker Bio

Rick Steiner is an independent Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) consultant and systems modeling coach, with clients in various Aerospace and Defense companies.  He retired after a 30-year career at Raytheon as an Engineering Fellow and a Raytheon Certified Architect. He has focused on pragmatic application of systems engineering modeling techniques and has been an advocate, consultant, and instructor of model-based engineering. Rick has served as chief engineer, architect, and lead system modeler for several large-scale defense programs.  He has been recognized by INCOSE as an Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP), and has been honored as an INCOSE Fellow.

Mr. Steiner continues to be a key contributor to the development of SysML, and contributor to the OCSMP certification. He is also co-author of “A Practical Guide to SysML”, currently in its 3rd edition.  Rick is an avid amateur astronomer, auto restorer, bass guitarist, Church volunteer, and recumbent bicyclist.
