Welcome to the Southern Maryland Chapter

Founded in February, 1998, the Southern Maryland Chapter follows the INCOSE International Mission, Vision and Goals.

Additionally, we will:

  • Continue our outreach program to support systems engineering conferences and events at both the Regional and International levels of INCOSE
  • Continue to build partnerships with local professional associations offering unique and diverse systems engineering insights while complimenting their inherent interest areas

Abstract: Solar Decathlon Winner Alex McDonald discusses his graduate work at the University of California, Irvine:

  • Designing and building a modular, solar powered house for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon 2015
  • Modeling the energy demand and retrofit of a Huntington Beach community of 10,000 people for use in a California Energy Commission's solar powered Advanced Energy Community.

The discussion will include topics on advanced solar powered and green-building best practices. It also will include utilizing whole building simulation tools for hourly, time-resolved energy modeling of the built environment for integration into a 100% renewable modern grid. It utilizes EVM measures providing application for agile practices in reporting plan progress.

Bio: Alex McDonald is a former mechanical engineering graduate student researcher and recent graduate from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California Irvine; graduated Fall 2017. Most recently, he was part of a public/private partnership working on behalf of the California Energy Commission’s Advanced Energy Community initiative to develop a solar powered district in Huntington Beach for a mixed-use community of 10,000 people where he models aggregate building energy demand. Prior to that, he managed one of the largest of teams in the USDOE’s Solar Decathlon 2015 competition, Team OC, which included 100 students across the campuses of University of California Irvine, Chapman University, Irvine Valley College, and Saddleback College. The Solar Decathlon was integrated into his graduate research where he incorporated the green building best practices. His management duties included development of integrated design practices, raising over a million dollars in resources, recruitment of students and professional mentors, and the construction of the solar home. Professionally, he has worked as a commercial HVAC consultant for Wood Harbinger where designs for clients such as The Boeing Company, US Navy, and Seattle Public Schools. While studying mechanical engineering and political science at Washington State University, Alex had several notable internships with CH2M Hill. Additionally, Alex marketed and raised $33,000 for UC Irvine’s entry into Elon Musk’s Hyperloop competition and founded WSU chapter of Engineers without Borders.
