This presentation exposes secrets in the development and current design of Ethernet(s) and how they affect the quality (error probability) in the transferred data. It begins with an overview of Ethernet development and basic concepts. It then covers how and where errors really occur in Ethernet transmissions (spoiler: not what most people think). Topics covered include: transmission line effects, the secret (proprietary) designs of Ethernet physical layer ICs (PHYs), how PHYs and cables have secret (unknown) interactions, how Ethernet installations should be tested for Bit Error Ratio (BER) per the IEEE 802.3 standard (spoiler: commercial BER testers are ~useless), and why the coverage of Ethernet CRCs is unknown without extensive testing.
