INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

A better world through a systems approach.

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is a not-for-profit membership organization founded to develop and disseminate the transdisciplinary principles and practices that enable the realization of successful systems. INCOSE is designed to connect systems engineering professionals with educational, networking, and career-advancement opportunities in the interest of developing the global community of systems engineers and systems approaches to problems. We are also focused on producing state-of-the-art work products that support and enhance this discipline’s visibility in the world.

INSIGHT Volume 28 Issue 2 May 2025

May 7, 2025, 10:00 AM by Janeen Schuh

Discover the State of the Systems Engineering Discipline in the May 2025 INSIGHT Magazine!

The May 2025 issue of INSIGHT, the systems engineering practitioners’ magazine, is out now! This issue has the unique topic of "The State of the Systems Engineering Discipline: A Longitudinal Analysis of INCOSE International Symposium Contributions (2012–2025)."

This first-of-its-kind meta-analysis examines over 4,000 submissions from nearly 5,000 authors across 14 years of INCOSE International Symposia. The research delivers unique value through three interconnected analyses:

  • Authors Analysis: Uncovers a distinctive "hourglass network" highlighting key contributors and a significant first-year attrition rate, offering valuable insights for community development.
  • Topics Analysis: Quantifies the methodological shift towards Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) while identifying persistent knowledge gaps and high-value research frontiers.
  • Acceptance Analysis: Reveals systematic patterns in knowledge validation, demonstrating tightening acceptance rates and submission characteristics that significantly impact outcomes.

The findings of this analysis are particularly relevant to the INCOSE Strategic Plan v1.0 and the future of systems engineering (FuSE) initiative, aiming to realize the System Engineering Vision 2035.

INCOSE members receive complimentary access to INSIGHT as a benefit of their membership. We encourage you to explore this insightful issue and share it with your colleagues.

Enjoy!
