Abstract:  Modern software packages exist which calculate cost and serve as an aid in bidding a Program. Available packages do not adequately offer the possibility to add in a trade study or system optimization with regards to performance verses cost. Instead, available packages require a completed System design or approach to develop the price for that System. Methods are needed to determine which components in a system would benefit from additional focus in to most significantly impact the overall system cost. Tools are needed to advise a System Designer what improvements to cost may be achieved through optimization and which design approach provides the best value (cost vs. performance) for the system. These methods are needed during concept development to aid in system scoping and cost estimation.

This presentation explores an effort to generate a cost sensitivity algorithm of the various components in a system to determine which subsystem components in a chosen design solution have the highest sensitivity to cost. The algorithm highlights the areas on which a System Designer could focus to reduce the overall System cost early in the life cycle of a Program. We show the cost sensitivity algorithm was applied to a sample cost model and that it demonstrates which component parameters were most sensitive and were the biggest cost drivers in the System design. In addition, an alternative was suggested which offered the system designer a significant opportunity to improve cost. And finally, Return On Investment, or ROI, was calculated to suggest a Trade Study budget for achieving potential cost improvements.

BIO:  Mr. Danny Polidi received a B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA in 1990 and 1991. Currently a PhD student for Systems Engineering at CSU. Upon graduation, he started working at Space Systems/Loral on high frequency, microwave designs for space applications. Later, at Radian Technology, he became Product Manager of the Digitally Tuned Oscillator Product Line where he was responsible for designing new circuits, writing code, and production. At NANOmetrics, Danny managed all Electronic Engineering activities. From 2004 – present he has worked at Raytheon as a Section Manger, Team Lead, Cost Account Manager and has been certified as a Program Manager.

    IW2020Members of the LA Chapter and attendees at the IW from across the world gathered at a Soiree  hosted by Dassault Systemes and NoMagic on Monday January 27 evening.  Conversations and contact information was shared during the event as folks shared work challenges and personal stories during the evening.   The LA Chapter is grateful to Dassault Ssytemes and NoMagic for enabling the event and to INCOSE board members who were able to attend, including Marilee Wheaton, one of our own, the new INCOSE President-Elect.  Plan to attend our next event at The Aerospace Corporation on Tuesday evening February 11.  See our events links to register.
