Abstract: Early stage R&D (ESR&D) is one of the most crucial phases in the design process. It blends and blurs the lines between science and engineering. Systems engineering applied in a risk-based, graded approach supports credibility of research results and provides a foundation for further technology maturation. The ESR&D Working Group is striving to explore principles and frameworks that tailor systems engineering for this pivotal phase in the design process. This presentation summarizes activities of the Working Group, accomplishments, initial concepts on frameworks, and opportunities for involvement.

    Biographies:

Ann Hodges has worked over 45 years at Sandia National Lab and is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff. She is a primary author of Sandia National Laboratories’ risk-informed graded approach to project management and product development/delivery, and served as the Mission Services Division’s systems engineering lead for the systems engineering part of the Project and Product Delivery System (PPDS) framework.

Dr. Michael DiMario holds a PhD in Systems Engineering, MBA in Management of Technology, MS in Computer Engineering, and significant course work in Space Science. He co-chairs the INCOSE Early SE R&D WG. As a hobby note, he is an avid amateur astronomer and is acknowledged for a pre-discovery of Pluto.

The Midwest Gateway Chapter of INCOSE was founded in St. Louis in 1992. Over the years we've hosted the INCOSE Symposium and the Conference on Systems Engineering Research (CSER), and been the home chapter of national and regional INCOSE leaders. Many of our members are engaged in defense, biotech, connected devices, and academia. Most members are located in St. Louis and the surrounding area (from Missouri S&T in Rolla to Scott Air Force Base in the Metro East), but all are welcome to affiliate with us.

For more information about joining INCOSE, please visit the incose.org website: Join INCOSE. If you're not sure about joining yet, come out and visit us at one of our events.
